Goodman was built on one idea from day one: solid heating and cooling without the premium price. Who owns it now, and where it is made, both change what happens when it needs a part.
- 1975 — Harold Goodman starts the company in Texas, aimed at affordable, no-frills equipment.
- 1982 — Goodman enters the HVAC business by acquiring Janitrol.
- 1997 — Goodman picks up the Amana name for heating and cooling.
- 2012 — Daikin, the world’s largest HVAC maker, buys Goodman for $3.7 billion.
- 2017 — Daikin opens a giant Texas factory, and Goodman, Amana, and Daikin all move under one roof.
- 2025 — Goodman shifts its new lineup to R-32 refrigerant ahead of the federal cutoff.
Goodman, Amana, and Daikin Are Built Side by Side
All three brands are built by the same company and share a lot of the same parts. Amana is the step-up badge with a stronger warranty, and Daikin is the premium, inverter-focused line. For a repair, the useful part is that components cross over between them, so parts are easy to find.
American-Built, Japanese-Owned
Goodman is designed and built in Texas but owned by Daikin of Japan, the largest HVAC company in the world. That is an unusual combination in a value brand: the engineering budget and scale of a global giant sitting behind equipment priced for everyday homes.

Goodman keeps its lineup focused on ducted central systems, the bread-and-butter equipment most Chester County homes actually run. Here is what it makes, and the work that is put in when a piece gives you trouble.
Air Conditioners
Goodman air conditioners are built around dependable scroll compressors, from straightforward single-stage units up to a newer inverter line. They are priced to be the sensible replacement when an old system quits, and you are not chasing the top of the market.
Heat Pumps
A Goodman heat pump heats and cools from one system, and pairs with a Goodman gas furnace for a dual-fuel setup. With a lot of Chester County homes still on oil or propane, it is an affordable way to start moving off that fuel, and we size and quote it at no charge.
Gas Furnaces
Goodman gas furnaces run from solid single-stage models up to two-stage and modulating units. Registered furnaces carry a lifetime heat-exchanger warranty, which is worth knowing the day that part is in question.
Air Handlers and Coils
On a heat pump or all-electric home, the air handler holds the coil and the blower that move your air. A tired blower or a dirty coil can pin the blame on a healthy outdoor unit, which is why we check inside first.
Packaged Units

The Warranty Is the Whole Point
Goodman built its name on long coverage. Register within 60 days of installation, and you get a 10-year parts warranty. On select models, you also get a lifetime compressor and a 10-year unit-replacement warranty for as long as you own the home. Skip the registration, and it drops to a 5-year parts warranty.
What it means for you: The single most expensive part, the compressor, can be covered for the life of your ownership on the right model. That flips the repair math in your favor years down the road, so registration is not paperwork to shrug off. We handle it on everything we install.
Built at One of the Biggest Factories in the Country
Goodman, Amana, and Daikin all roll out of the Daikin Texas Technology Park near Houston, a 4.2-million-square-foot plant, the third-largest factory in the United States.
What it means for you: A value brand does not usually come with manufacturing on this scale. It means consistent build quality and an easy-to-reach parts supply, which keeps repair waits short.
It Runs on R-32, Not R-454B
Under Daikin, the company that championed R-32 around the world, Goodman moved its new lineup to R-32 while most American brands chose R-454B.
What it means for you: R-32 uses a smaller refrigerant charge and has a lower climate impact. The catch is that R-32 parts will not retrofit an older R-410A Goodman, so the system has to stay matched, one refrigerant throughout.
Your Goodman’s Age and Size, Off the Plate
Your Goodman is easy to read. Both numbers you need are right up front on the metal plate.
Model number — the size
GLXS5B036
The number in the middle is the size in thousands of BTU, so 036 means 36,000 BTU, or three tons. Divide it by twelve to get the tonnage. The letters in front tell you the product line and efficiency.
Serial number — the year
2405123456
Goodman makes this one simple. The first two digits are the year and the next two are the month. Here, 2405 means May of 2024.
A couple of notes:
- First four digits = date — year, then month, right at the start. No decoder needed.
- The model prefix changed with R-32 — new refrigerant, new model numbers, so a recent Goodman will not match an older naming chart.
- Pre-2010 units — older formats vary, so send us a photo if the start does not look like a date.
Even with an easy code, age is what steers the repair-or-replace call. A five-year-old Goodman and a fifteen-year-old one are two different conversations, so it is worth pinning down first.
When a Goodman Breaks, How Hard Is the Fix?
Every system fails eventually, and for a Goodman, the good news is getting hands on the components is rarely the hard part. Because Goodman, Amana, and Daikin share components and come from one of the largest plants in the country, the common failures are quick to source.
The everyday parts stay everyday. Capacitors, contactors, fan motors, and control boards are stocked widely and inexpensive to replace, which makes fixing a younger Goodman an easy call.
The coil and the compressor are the expensive exceptions, and this is exactly where Goodman’s warranty earns its keep. Before you weigh a big repair, the first move is always to check what is still covered.

Why a New Goodman Runs on R-32
Older Goodman systems use R-410A refrigerant. The new lineup uses R-32, which Daikin chose instead of the R-454B most American brands adopted.
The American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act began winding down high-warming refrigerants and changed what manufacturers can put in new equipment.
If you already own a Goodman on R-410A, you can still have it serviced. Repairs and recharges are still allowed. What is changing is the price, since R-410A gets more expensive as production winds down, and R-32 parts cannot be mixed into an R-410A system.
So if an older Goodman keeps losing its charge or needs a major refrigerant repair, it is worth comparing that cost against replacing the system.

A failed capacitor on a younger Goodman is a completely different conversation from a compressor failure on an older system. The repair decision comes down to the part, the condition of the equipment, and whether the money you spend today is buying you reliable comfort for the years ahead.

A Goodman under 10 years old often deserves a repair conversation first.

A newer Goodman with a single failed part may have many good years ahead.
10 to 15 Years: The Repair Has to Earn Its Place
