- 1895 — Dave Lennox builds the first riveted-steel furnace in Marshalltown, Iowa.
- 1904 — The Norris family buys the company, and still holds a large stake today.
- 1988 — Lennox buys back Armstrong Air, the start of its family of value brands.
- 1991 — Lennox moves its headquarters to the Dallas, Texas area, where it still sits today in Richardson.
- 1999 — Lennox lists on the New York Stock Exchange as LII.

Efficiency You Can Measure
Lennox routinely tops the charts for efficiency, both for cooling and for gas heat. Its top systems adjust output in small steps instead of slamming on at full power every cycle.
What it means for you: Lower running costs month to month. The trade-off is a higher price up front, and the variable-speed electronics can cost more to repair once the warranty is up, so age and coverage matter on a big fix.
The Coil Is Aluminum, and It Is a Lennox Part
Lennox builds its outdoor coils from aluminum, which resists corrosion well. Like the coil on most premium brands, it is made for that equipment rather than pulled from a universal supply.
What it means for you: A leaking coil is usually an order, not a shelf part. You should get the lead time written next to the price, not discovered later, and on older equipment, that wait is often what points toward replacing instead.
The 60-Day Warranty Window
Lennox covers parts for 5 years out of the box. Register the system online within 60 days of installation, and that jumps to 10 years on most series. Miss the window, and you keep the 5.
What it means for you: Most homeowners never hear about the 60 days until the eighth year, when it is far too late. We register every system we install and send you the confirmation, and if we did not install yours, we will show you where to check what you have.
Decoding Your Lennox Model and Serial
A banded penguin carries its history on its flipper. Your Lennox carries its age and size stamped on a metal plate, and two numbers there answer most of what a technician needs before anyone drives out.
Model number — the size
XC16-036
The middle number is the size. Read it as thousands of BTU, then divide by twelve to get tons. Here, 036 means 36,000 BTU, which is three tons. (The XC16 part tells you it is a 16-rated air conditioner.)
Serial number — the year
5621G12345
On Lennox equipment made since the 1970s, the first two digits are the plant, and the third and fourth digits are the year. Here, that is 21, so the unit was built in 2021. The letter after them is the month.
How to tell what you are looking at:
- 1973 to today — plant code first, then the year in the third and fourth digits.
- Before 1973 — the year sits in the first two digits instead.
- Not sure? — many Lennox plates also print a plain “Manufactured MM/YYYY” date. If it is there, trust that first.
Why two online decoders will give you two different years. Lennox has changed its serial format over the decades, and some decoders misread it as a week-and-year code. Read us what is stamped on the plate, and we will tell you which format you have.
Age settles more of the repair-or-replace conversation than anything else. A ten-year-old Lennox and a twenty-year-old Lennox call for two different talks, and knowing which one you have changes what we would tell you to spend.
What Fails on a Lennox, and Getting the Parts
Every manufacturer builds something that eventually fails, and a page that claims otherwise is a sales page. On a Lennox, what happens next depends almost entirely on which part gave out.
The everyday parts are the easy ones. Contactors, capacitors, fan motors, and control boards are the common failures, and fixing them makes sense on a system with years left in it. One System, Sometimes Two Refrigerants
Many older Lennox systems use R-410A refrigerant. Newer ducted systems use R-454B, and Lennox mini-splits use R-32, all because of updated federal rules.
The American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act began winding down high-warming refrigerants and changed what manufacturers can put in new equipment.
If you already own a Lennox on R-410A, you can still have it serviced. Repairs and recharges are still allowed. What is changing is the price, since R-410A gets more expensive to buy as production winds down.

A Lennox under 10 years old often has plenty of life left. Many repairs on newer systems are straightforward. Before approving any major repair, we recommend checking what warranty coverage still applies. Lennox equipment often carries longer coverage on certain major components when registered. A newer Lennox that has a single failed part usually deserves a repair conversation first.
10 to 15 Years: The Part Decides
This is where the failed component matters more than the Lennox name on the cabinet. A smaller repair can still make sense and keep your system running comfortably for years. A major component failure is where the decision becomes more complicated. A capacitor, control, blower motor, or electrical repair may be a reasonable investment on a Lennox in this age range.
